Advertised as a chance of a lifetime using the Blue Pullman dining coaches and with a ticket price of £96 per head it promised to be memorable - it was - FOR THE WRONG REASONS! No Pullman Coaches, a complete mish-mash of scrappy coaches slapped together and the indignity of a Silver 47 tucked in behind The Star herself. A WRVS charther would have produced a better set of coaches. NOT VALUE FOR MONEY! But the sight of 840 in Green was a memorable one. 47840 with 47828 tucked in behind an a rake of lousy liveried coaches with 45112 on the rear glides into Taunton at 12:35, on May 28th 2007 840 runs ever closer to Taunton NIce shot! Note the running number of 47840 on the lower body side, a nice touch, but despite the publicity of the repaint the waist skirting was not reapplied at Loughborough, but a damned good job was done anyway, WELL DONE BRUSH! With the pilotman aboard and the road set 47840 glides out of Taunton for the last time en route to the WSR for a well earned retirement. The end of an era.............or is it?????? May 28th 2007

37701 hauls a dead 47840 and its train nearly 3 hrs late, the 1M56 Penzance - Man Picc, July 1998, storming thorugh Newton Abbot en route to Exeter 47555 hauls 840 dead from its train and prepares to dump the loco on Crewe DED. 840 had failed the night previous at Bournemouth and 4755 was sent to haul the train and 840 to Crewe. July 1990 This day saw 840 rescue 3 trains in an 8 hr period, this is the second, 1A15 Padd - Penzance Motorail. FGW 47815 literally expired at Newton Abbot with a camshaft fault, 840 was the stand- by loco at Newton Abbot this day and it promptly performed sterling work. July 2000 7th July 2001 and 47840 drags the 09:10 HSt from Plymouth to Newton Abbot due to a defective power car. The loco perfermed faultlessly all day rescuing failed trains, a real money earner for Virgin, and a godsend for FGW.

Special thanks to Nigel Tilley of Porterbrook Leasing Co for providing such a comprehensive collection of photos, it will take time to show them all! 47840 is swung high over the shop floor at it birth place. Some 30 years earlier the loco was constructed right here in the works. Gleaming in the afternoon sun at BRML Crewe in May 1995 just after a re-dedication ceremenoy and the unveiling of the original plates. I was due to have been present this day to unveil the nameplates but couldnt attend as my wife went into premature labour! Loco 117 tons, Baby 7lbs 4 oz, female - Bethany! What would you have done? The refurbished power unit being made ready to refit into the engine bay of 840 Gently does it - the power unit is carefully lowered into the engine room bay with inches to spare Final positioning of the power unit The Cooling group is prepared to be refitted to the loco

Its actually taken in 1981 and shows the loco at Manchester Piccadilly after hauling a service from euston. Not taken by myself, so if you know who took it kindly let me know. 47077, renumbered for the day from 840 on the last loco hauled Virgin Cross Country Service at Newton Abbot North Star awaits traction motor at Old Oak Common April 87 47613 stands in the afternoon sunshine at Old oak Common on 8th April 1986. Anothr view of 613. Note the number is positioned under the cab window, only 2 class 47s had this, 613 and 446. The number was moved back to the normal position behind the cab door 3 months later North Star in the fuel shed at Old Oak 47840 chunters away in the early evening at Crewe, May 15th 2003 47847 and 47840 roar out the tunnel with a late running 1V50 Glasgow to Penzance service tha last sunday to have 47 haulage. Overnight 840 was renumbered to 077 for the last ever return trip. August 2002 In the right place at the right time! 8th April 1985, 47613 only 2 months out of works after conversion to an ETH 47/4 at Reading with a service to Newbury from Paddington. with the usual working- 1M56 - 840 powers along the seawall towards the Warren at Dawlish, here approaching Rockstone Bridge. April 2002 840 pauses at Newton Abbot with 1M56 Penzance - Man Picc on August 1st 2002 July 2nd 2002, on the bridge at Aller Jcn, along with over 30 other photographers, including Colin Marsden, 47840 comes up from Paignton with the 16:10 Paignton- Preston 1M25 service, with the DVT directly behind the loco. The pennultimate journey. North Star renumbered for this day only to 47077 along with 47847 head out of Newton Abbot bounfd for Birmingham on the last ever Virgin Cross Country Class 47 hauled service. August 2002. A very sad day, but a memorable one for the loco. 47840 powers round Langstone rock at Dawlish Warren with 1M56 to Man Picc in July 2002, another 7 secs and this view would have been bvlocked by a 67. 840 was running 56 mins late . August 19th 2002, the line up of the celebrity Class 47s operated by Virgin XC. North Star stands prodly in the middle of the line up complete with the commerative headboard after working the very last train to Birmingham from Penzance Running over 100 minutes late, and North Star trundles through Totnes en route to Plymouth with 5Z47 09:30 Derby Lichurch Lane - Laira stock move conveying refubished MK 3s for FGW, the loco carries
